FAQs

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions at the studio. If you are in need of advice for your wig and the answer isn’t here, please don’t take any risks. Please call or email and I will be happy to help.

  • A properly fitted wig should never fall off. This involves taking correct head measurements which defines the correct cap size that you will need; Petite, Average, or Large.

Choosing the correct wig size along with the right cap construction for your head will ensure you have the most secure and comfortable fit possible.

Wig fitting is included in your free consultation.

  • Ideally your wig should be washed after 6-8 wears. Always wash your wig in cool water and using the correct products to clean them. Never use hot water as it will damage the fibres in your wig.

The reason most wigs need cleaning is to rinse the accumulated scalp oils from the cap, rather than to wash the actual fibres. However, if you use a lot of styling products such as mousse, gel, or spray on your wig, it will likely need to be washed more often.

Remember, each time the wig is washed, it shortens its lifespan. The idea is to use as few styling products as possible, so that it won't need to be washed as often. Also, wearing a wig cap underneath your wig will help to absorb the scalp oils.

    How to wash your wig:

When the wig is ready to be washed, fill the sink with cool to luke warm water.

Pour about 2 capfuls of synthetic wig shampoo into the water and then submerge the wig. When the wig is fully wet, swish it around for about a minute and then let soak for about another minute.

TIP: Leave the wig to soak in the shampoo and water for 5 minutes before washing. This will loosen any stubborn debris and require less rubbing friction. Repeat the washing process if you feel that the first wash has not fully cleansed the hair or fibre.

Remove the wig and rinse in cold water until no suds remain. Then place the wig on a bath towel to completely dry overnight, or you may place it on a folding wig stand, which will speed up the drying process.

It is all right to blot the wig with a towel, but don't twist the wig or ring it out. You can use your fingers to gently separate and arrange the strands as the wig is drying, but don't try to comb or brush the wig while still wet. The fibres could be stretched to the breaking point. Tip: Always rinse the shampoo off with the water flowing in the direction of the hair fibre.

Lightly spray conditioner onto the wig after towel drying to aid later brushing and to return oils lost through the washing procedure.

If you wish, you can use a spray-on conditioner on the wig while damp. Work the conditioner through the strands with your fingers, NOT a brush or comb.

When the wig is completely dry, you can brush it and style it as you usually would.

  • The most important guideline is to use products that have been specifically formulated for use on synthetic fibre wigs and hairpieces. Even the most mild and gentle products intended for human hair will eventually dull the fibres of a synthetic wig.

Hairspray for human hair is especially damaging to a synthetic wig, and it can actually deteriorate the fibres. It is important to use combs and brushes that are designed for use on synthetic wigs, or if using a regular hairbrush or comb, be sure it has the rubber "tips" at the end of each brush bristle or tooth of the comb. This will prevent the fibres from splitting, and keep the wig from looking fuzzy and dull before its time.

Can I style my wig using a hair dryer or straighteners?

Depending on which type of wig you have, absolutely! Both human hair wigs and HD fibre wigs can be heat styled.

Take care when styling your HD wig - they can be heat styled with hot irons and hairdryers but the temperature should not exceed 180°c as the intense heat will melt the fibres and damage your wig.

If your synthetic wig is not HD do not ever use any type of electric styling appliances on it. Even on the coolest settings, a hair dryer or straighteners will frizz the fibres, and may even melt them.

  • It’s not advised to sleep in your wig overnight regularly. We’ve rescued many wigs damaged from being slept in overnight, they had become very matted and tangled - something that should be avoided with wigs as it’s difficult to reverse.

  • If proper care is applied, synthetic wigs can last up to 18 months- 2 years. Wearing a wig cap will also increase the lifespan of your wig as it will reduce the frequency of washing and the more your wig is washed, the quicker the quality will deteriorate.

Human hair wigs last up to 3 years with the utmost care.

Of course, the quality of the wig can affect longevity. If poor quality it may only last for 12 months or even less - that’s why we only stock wigs in the studio made by the best designers.

  • There are 5 different types of cap construction:

Traditional - Identified by the traditional closed flower net lace top. Open wefting on sides and back which are machine sewn. Very durable and has good lift at the crown and root areas. Can weigh slightly more than other types of construction.

Capless - Identified by the open wefting through out the wig allowing the air to circulate. The construction creates volume and lift due to the slight pre- teasing found at the root area. Light weight, airy and comfortable.

Monofilament - Identified by the hand knotted sheer base which creates a very natural look and allows you to style and part the hair in any direction you like so that the hair looks like it is growing from the scalp. There are 3 construction types: Monofilament top, monofilament parting and monofilament crown. Very popular and natural.

Hand tied - Identified by the hand knotted sheer base which is extremely light and contours to the shape of the scalp. Specifically designed for people with total hairloss or sensitive scalps. The hair can be styled or parted in any direction and has a very natural look. Light weight and very comfortable.

Lacefront - Identified by the hand knotted lace front. Very popular due to creating a natural hairline and allowing you to wear the hair away from the face. The 2 basic types of construction are Ready To Wear which has a pre-cut lace front and the Professional lace front which will need to be cut back to create a custom hairline (will require adhesive or tape).
